Sciatica

A person suffering from sciatica has an inflamed sciatic nerve. This nerve starts roughly at the base of the spine, travels down the back of the leg and then stops in the foot. Sciatic pain is difficult to treat because nerve pain does not respond well to painkillers. Sciatica can cause severe, stabbing pain and can make the patient cry out when sudden movements are made.

People may experience:

  • Pain areas: in the back, buttocks, hip, or lower extremities
  • Pain types: can be mild, severe, radiating, or sharp
  • Pain circumstances: can occur due to injury or while sitting
  • Muscular: difficulty walking or muscle weakness
  • Sensory: leg numbness or pins and needles
  • Also common: burning sensation, foot numbness, or weakness

Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system and allowing for the body to regain its natural balance. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have proven to be effective for many people who suffer from sciatica. Dr. Herrin’s sciatica patients get relief after one visit 90% of the time.

Chinese herbal medicine can also play an important role in treating this condition.  Dr. Herrin is an herbalist also and can incorporate Chinese herbal medicine to help with sciatic pain.

She  also teaches her patients various stretches and posture alignment exercises that are helpful for both prevention and for active flare ups.

With the right combination of therapies, sciatica typically responds very well to treatment.
